Under the title ‘What future for Lebanon? And the role of the European Union in promoting human rights in Lebanon’, a conference was held on Tuesday evening (27 June) at the headquarters of the European Union in Brussels. The event was attended by MEPs, judges, and officials who gathered to show their support for Omar Harfouch, the leader of the Lebanese Third Republic initiative. Harfouch has been facing political and judicial repression due to his relentless fight against corruption in Lebanon.

The conference was held at the invitation of Lucas Mandel, a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, and was attended by several notable figures. These included Judge Ghada Aoun, the prosecutor of Mount Lebanon; Andre Petrojev, a member of the Foreign Relations Committee; Natalie Gaulier, a member of the French Senate; William Bourdon, the founder of the organization “Sherpa” and a lawyer; Giovanni Kessler, former Director-General of OLAF and former Italian Member and Magistrate; Pedro Roque, a Portuguese MP; Antonio Topa Gomes, a Portuguese MP; as well as representatives from various European countries.

Claude Moniquet stqarr li Harfouch kien fil-mira ta’ pjan organizzat u inġust, filwaqt li enfasizza li ma kien hemm l-ebda raġuni valida għall-arrest tiegħu. Moniquet appellat lill-Unjoni Ewropea biex tintervjeni u tirrevoka l-mandat ta’ arrest maħruġ fil-konfront ta’ Harfouch mill-Prim Ministru tal-Libanu, peress li din l-azzjoni tiċħadlu l-opportunità li jiddefendi lilu nnifsu skont il-liġi.

Huwa importanti li wieħed jinnota li n-natura tal-każ hija ċivili, mhux kriminali. Barra minn hekk, l-akkużi ta’ Harfouch li jkun f’kuntatt ma’ Iżraeljani jew Lhud fi ħdan il-Parlament Ewropew huma insult gravi għall-Unjoni Ewropea, li tiftaħar li hija post fejn nies ta’ kull nazzjonalità u reliġjon jistgħu jingħaqdu. L-Avukat William Bourdon, li reċentement irritorna minn żjara f’Beirut, indirizza l-kwistjoni tal-ġlieda kontra l-korruzzjoni fil-Libanu.

Huwa ddiskuta d-delitti mwettqa minn Riad Salameh, il-gvernatur tal-Banque du Liban, kif ukoll il-fondi ffriżati fl-Ewropa, li hu personalment issorvelja u kixef. Bourdon kompla żvela li l-jiem li ġejjin se jġibu sorpriżi mhux pjaċevoli għal ċerti politiċi involuti f’każijiet ta’ korruzzjoni u ħasil ta’ flus.

L-Imħallef Ghada Aoun, li bħalissa qed tiffaċċja persekuzzjoni minħabba l-ġlieda tagħha kontra l-imħallfin korrotti fil-Libanu, enfasizzat li l-ġustizzja vera hija essenzjali għall-eżistenza tal-istat Libaniż. Hija kkunsidrat it-trattament ta’ Harfouch bħala l-aktar evidenza b’saħħitha ta’ korruzzjoni fi ħdan is-sistema ġudizzjarja.

Giovanni Kessler, fl-appoġġ tiegħu għal Harfouch u individwi Lebaniżi oħra li qed jiġġieldu l-korruzzjoni, iddikjara li l-Libanu jirrikjedi b’mod urġenti aktar attenzjoni u assistenza biex jirrestawra l-istat tad-dritt u jiġġieled il-korruzzjoni li qerdet il-pajjiż. Bħala kontributur sinifikanti, l-Unjoni Ewropea għandha l-abbiltà li tħeġġeġ it-twaqqif ta' awtorità investigattiva konġunta bejn l-UE u l-Libanu. Din l-awtorità jkollha s-setgħat meħtieġa biex twettaq investigazzjonijiet indipendenti dwar il-korruzzjoni u l-użu ħażin tal-fondi tal-UE fil-Libanu.

During his speech, Harfouch discussed his case in the military court, specifically highlighting that the court’s actions against him lacked depth and failed to consider the passage of time. He pointed out that the meeting with an Israeli journalist occurred in 2004 and emphasized that his fight against corruption has exposed numerous scandals and cases.

Interessanti li Harfouch ma semmax lill-prim ministru, Najib Mikati, jew lill-ewwel imħallef investigattiv ta’ Tripli, Samaranda Nassar, li bħalissa huma impenjati f’kampanja mhux ġustifikata kontrih. Meta mistoqsi dwar din l-ommissjoni, spjega li ma xtaqx jisfrutta l-pjattaforma pprovduta mill-Unjoni Ewropea biex jikseb punti personali. Minflok, huwa jemmen li dawk li attendew li ġew infurmati dwar il-kwistjonijiet u r-riżultati jistgħu jaslu għall-konklużjonijiet tagħhom stess.
